Lenten Rose (hellebore)

Even in January, you can be active in your garden.

•This month you can prune summer flowering plants such as kerria and rose of Sharon, because they bloom on new wood. Don’t prune your spring flowering shrubs, such as azaleas and hydrangeas because you will remove the flower pods. •Seeds of cool weather vegetables, such as collards, kale, turnips, radishes, carrots and spinach can be planted now. This also is the time to set out transplants of broccoli and cauliflower. Start seeds of tomatoes and peppers indoors and transplant them outdoors after the last frost. •If you plan to include herbs in your garden, begin sowing seeds of dill, chives and coriander. •All types of ornamental tress and shrubs can be planted this month. These can be purchased in containers, or as balled-and-burlapped or bare-root stock. •Bulbs such as crocus, daffodils, Dutch iris, hyacinths and tulips can still be planted if you do so before the end of the month. •Look for tree seedlings that begin appearing in bedded areas. Pull these seedlings up now before the roots become too deep.
