While winter rages on, home gardeners are poring over seed catalogs and plotting their summer gardens, which sometimes begin now by starting seeds indoors. If you are one of the many gardeners to do that, you want all that effort to pay off with hardy seedlings. A good place to begin is on the website of NGB Associate member, Home Garden Seed Association. Another good tool comes from NGB member, Harris Seeds, who shares some qualitative studies showing how an organic fertilizer, Worm Power, produces remarkably larger tomato and lettuce seedlings over those sown in straight seed starting mix. “Notice the advanced plant development with the Worm Power added,” said Richard Chamberlin, President of Harris Seeds in Rochester, NY. The baby greens on the left were seeded into standard potting mix, while the greens on the right were seeded into the same potting mix, blended with 20% Worm Power. Worm Power is a certified organic fertilizer produced by millions of earthworms, raised in an award-winning facility in the Finger Lakes area of NY. It contains “plant ready” macro and micronutrients, plus a diverse, abundant, microbiological community that enriches the physical structure, chemical makeup, and biological activity of both soil and soilless growing media. Customer testimonials show similar results. Rochester, N.Y. home gardener Patrick Duggan got a late start planting his tomatoes last summer so he used Worm Power at the base of the young plants. “Eight weeks later you would never know that they got a late start, and they are now full of fruit with vigorous growth,” Duggan said.
